According to Jo Ann Pederson, the town Superintendent of Parks and Recreation, the items confirmed stolen were two guns from World War II, a Japanese sword, and a gas mask. The items were on display in the center's Hall of Heroes in the History Room.
Pederson told the Daily Voice on Friday that the suspects gained access by prying open a window, but once inside the building, remained in the History Room.
If they had exited the classroom, the building's alarm system would’ve been triggered, which leads Pederson to believe that the suspect was familiar with the building. The suspect left through the window, she said.
The Clarkstown Police Department investigated the break-in.
“We’re just waiting for their report at this point,” Pederson said.
The items stolen were donated by seniors in Clarkstown, and for many it feels like an invasion of privacy, Pederson said.
