The Journal News/lohud.com study compaired Hoehmann’s $170,309 annual salary to that of Mike Spano’s, who makes $156,100 as mayor of Yonkers, a city that, the media outlet pointed out, has a population more than twice the size of Clarkstown’s.
Following Hoehmann, the Journal News/lohud.com study found, were: Ramapo Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence ($145,574); Haverstraw town Supervisor Howard T. Phillips ($115,790); Spring Valley Mayor Demeza Delhomme ($115,000) and Orangetown Supervisor Andy Stewart ($104,503).
A good chunk of elected officials in Rockland County have not been shy about giving themselves raises, but the size of the salary bumps don’t seem to follow one set pattern, the Journal News/lohud.com story said.
Journal News/lohud.com pointed out that New Square's mayor, Israel Spitzer, had gotten a $75,000 hike because of a change in the government's set-up, while Haverstraw's village mayor, Michael Kohut, got a 50 percent, or $21,000, increase because his position had changed into a full-time one.
The analysis, which compared Rockland salaries and raises to those of elected officials in Westchester, did not address pay for other positions such as comptrollers and clerks, because, Journal News/lohud.com said, some of those could be appointed instead of elected.
