Shaz, a 22-month-old black Labrador retriever from Washington state, was welcomed to the Rockland County Sheriff’s office last week by Sheriff Louis Falco, who informed the public of the new addition via Facebook.
The dog, who is to specialize in drug detection, will be first K9 deployed full-time at the Rockland County jail, according to Falco, who said she must undergo extensive training at an Orange County, N.Y. police K9 facility.
Shaz and her partner, Corrections Sgt. David Lowe, are expected to complete the training program by mid-November, Falco said.
