Julio Lema-Caguana, 20, who was being held at the jail on a charge of sexual misconduct, was caught trying to cut through the layers of his cell window during a routine cell inspection, said Det. Lt. Ted Brovarski.
Brovarski said Lema-Caguana used improvised tools to attempt the escape. He also attempted to remove concrete from the frame of another cell window.
After the discovery, Lema-Caguana was charged with attempted escape, promoting prison contraband and criminal mischief, Brovarski added.
Brovarski said there are multiple levels of security at the jail and the surrounding perimeter and there was no danger to the public at any time.
Lema Caguana is being held on an additional $10,000 bail. He is due to return to court on May 10.
