This week the department is stressing the importance of having a proper security system on computers, especially on home systems, after a Congers business was hacked and has been unable to do business for three days, police said.
Police responded to the business after receiving a complaint of a reported computer hacking incident. When officers arrived they were told that employees noticed their computers were not responding properly and that only one file on the company server was responsive, police said.
The responsive file was a set of instructions which dictated that in order to unlock the hacked files the company would need to send five Bit Coins (valued at approximately $5,000) to an unknown hacker. The file also contained the required links to complete the transactions that the suspect demanded, police said.
The company has a backup hard drive system that they are currently working to install so that the company can proceed with regular business but that this incident has cost the company three days of business, police said.
The company utilizes a third party company for IT needs. The IT company is currently working to determine the source of the computer virus, police added.
