The shooting took place around 1:30 p.m. as Farina, who was off-duty from his position as a corrections officer, and his wife, Jennifer Farina, were driving on Long Mountain Parkway in the Town of Woodbury in Orange County, said Trooper Steven Nevel.
Farina, 42, of Stony Point, lost control of the car when he suffered a single gunshot wound to the head. The vehicle then crossed the double yellow center line, left the roadway, and struck a rock embankment, Nevel said.
Jennifer Farina, 42, was transported by ambulance to Orange Regional Medical Center and treated for non-life threatening injuries, Nevel said.
Frank Farina was also transported to Orange Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
State police investigators interviewed Jennifer Farina Tuesday afternoon, but are not disclosing any information as the investigation continues.
Once the autopsy is complete, investigators hope to be able to close the case.
Farina worked for the Rockland County Corrections Division for more than a decade.
