"We came onto the force at the same time and he was just a great guy," said Rockland County Sheriff's Chief Willliam Barbera. "He was quiet, but someone you could also go to when you needed help with anything from union matters to contracts to helping with an officer."
McCune, a big hunter and outdoorsman, was scheduled to take the trip of his dreams, a safari to Africa in the near future: "I can't believe he missed that trip," said Barbera. "He worked his whole life, retires and then he is gone before he can enjoy the trip and life."
Involved with the Boy Scouts of America for more than 40 years, Troop 61 in Stony Point, where McCune had once served as Scoutmaster wrote on their Facebook page: "Matt will be greatly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones at this time."
Clarkstown Police Chief Michael Sullivan, who worked with McCune on numerous occasions, said it was a tragedy, "that Matt, a dedicated and superior public servant," didn't get to enjoy his retirement.
"He was just a great guy to work with," Sullivan said.
His death was especially hard for the Stony Point Police Department where one of his two sons is an officer, said Lt. Keith Williams.
"It's just such a tragedy is all I can say," he added.
Orangtown Police Capt. Jim Brown worked with McCune for many years on the county's REACT team. He said McCune was a good man and a great cop: "It's unfortunate he didn't get to enjoy his retirement."
Visiting hours will be from 3-9 p.m. on Friday at the T.J. McGowan Funeral Home, 71 N. Central Highway, in Garnerville. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church, 26 John St., in Stony Point. Internment will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony's Cemetery, 36 West Nyack Rd., in Nanuet.
