Police sent out an alert Friday about the positive rabies test by the Rockland County Health Department. Clarkstown's animal control officer found the raccoon in the area of Long Clove Road in New City earlier this week.
Police said there have been no reports that the raccoon had any contact with people, but police are reminding residents about the threat to pets, as well. Rabies in raccoons has been in the news this week after authorities in New Jersey learned that the raccoon that attacked a 6-year-old boy in Elmwood Park has rabies.
The Rockland County Health Department offers free rabies shot clinics, police said. Call 845-364-2594 for details.
