The newly formed Rockland Organization for Active Resistance (ROAR) is all about offering practical local actions to defend progressive values in the era of the Trump presidency.
The goal, explained Founder Jeanine Cummins, is to turn the excitement of the national Women's Marches into direct participation in democracy. "We want a movement, not a moment," she said.
"There was such a feeling of hope after the Marches that I'm determined to put that passion into action."
She stressed that ROAR is trying to reach people in a bipartisan manner. "We even have at least one self-professed Trump supporter in our ranks," she said.
"I welcomed him with the idea that there are plenty of people who voted for the president for the good they believe he can do, but who are still alarmed by certain elements of his agenda.
"We are aiming for genuine inclusion, though obviously our efforts and ideals are entirely progressive.
"All this hateful rhetoric is so counterproductive."
This group is brand new but already has 112 new members thanks to word of mouth. Cummins, a best-selling author and speaker, said so far, there's a lot of great energy and determination.
She's also received an invitation from another local group doing similar work to combine efforts, so there's plan in place to meet and devise strategies.
Cummins said she's still in the incubating phase but encourages new members to join. Her goal? To make it easy for people to participate --and make a difference.
