State Sen. David Carlucci joined the non-profit to deliver their 8,000th meal to Marian Merton, a 102-year-old senior, in Nanuet.
Carlucci recently helped the organization secure $50,000 in funding to support the Homebound Meal Delivery Program. The program provides balanced and nutritional meals to any resident in the county who cannot shop or cook for themselves due to illness, physical disability, or advanced age.
Stephen Papas, Director of Development for Meals on Wheels explained the significance of the funding.
“This year, 58 older adults were able to receive meals thanks to this funding instead of being placed on our wait list,” he said.
Roughly 80 percent of Meals on Wheels home deliveries are to seniors 75 years of age or older. To date, the organization has delivered 9 million meals to people in Rockland.
“Getting this funding for Meals on Wheels is critical to helping our region combat hunger. Meals on Wheels shares my belief that those in need deserve assistance. Programs like Meals on Wheels are the lifeblood of our community and I will continue to support them in the State Senate.”
