The Independence Café, which makes its home on the second floor of the courthouse, is a subsidiary of Rockland Independent Living Center (RILC). It was developed to provide employment opportunities for veterans and those with disabilities.
“We are proud to spearhead this initiative that provides a valuable service to visitors and employees of the courthouse and puts Veterans and individuals with disabilities back to work,” said Carlos Martinez, director of medicaid and business related services.
The café offers coffee, bagels, donuts, soups, pre-packaged sandwiches, salads, snack foods and cold beverages and is located in an easily accessible spot for employees in the courthouse and nearby county office building.
Soon, the business will be selling travel mugs with the Independence Café logo and a barcode that will allow customers to pay for their morning coffee faster.
The business is open from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
The café is RILC’s second small business program. It’s first, Connections Contact Center, opened last year and provides call center solutions and other business support services to companies throughout the region and beyond. It employs a number of veterans and people with disabilities.
