Nanuet Restaurant Makes DVlicious 'Best Kid-Friendly' Rockland List

NANUET, N.Y. -- We get it. You like to eat. And you like to eat out. But dining with kids, especially young ones -- can sometimes get sticky -- in more ways than one. Kudos to the places that offer up pleasing menus for both adults and kids as well as surroundings that don’t feel like you’re dining at Mickey D’s.

Nanuet Restaurant's unassuming red-brick exterior hides the source for the best Nonna-like pizza around, say long-time patrons.

Nanuet Restaurant, Nanuet

Why It's Kid Worthy: Housed in an unassuming, red-brick building, Nanuet Restaurant may be not so much kid worthy as worthy of bringing out the kid in adults who have patronized the pizza joint since way back when. They wax nostalgic about pies that are like the ones Nonna used to make – so well-crafted that they are not junk food, not gourmet, but “bespoke,” as one grown-up fan put it. Words like “time warp” and “totally authentic” drip like molten mozzarella from their lips. The décor has pretty much stayed the same since the 1970s – check out the wall of plastic foam skimmer hats decorated by customers – but that’s part of its charm. Also taking them down memory lane are its “classic” video games such as “Ms. Pac-Man” and “Asteroids.” But pint-sized patrons, take heart, there is a kids’ menu with chicken nuggets and fries; spaghetti, ziti or ravioli with a meatball; and grilled-cheese sammies. If you’re really lucky you might catch sight of a celebrity; Brooke Shields, Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy have been known to pop in once in a while.
