Author Of Book Examining Kiryas Joel To Speak In West Nyack

WEST NYACK, N.Y. – Louis Grumet, co-author of “The Curious Case of Kiryas Joel: The Rise of a Village Theocracy and the Battle to Defend the Separation of Church and State,” is scheduled to speak this week at the Jewish Community Center of Rockland County, according to lohud.com.

Grumet is scheduled to speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, according to lohud.com, which reported that tickets cost $18 in advance and $25 at the door.

Grumet, joins the JCC as it opens its 2016 Festival or Arts, Books & Culture, a month-long celebration, according to lohud.com.

Named after Grand Rebbe Joel Teitelbaum in 1977, Kiryas Joel was established near Monroe in Orange County by Satmar Jews as a “promised land,” according to lohud.com, which reported that the group has held an increasing level of political power in the decades since.

Grumet, a former special assistant to Gov. Mario Cuomo, is expected to discuss the history of the land and the seminal court case – The Board of Education of the Village of Kiryas Joel v. Grumet – that went all the way to the Supreme Court in 1994, according to lohud.com.
