The annual gathering, set for March 2, will be held at SUNY Rockland Community College’s campus in Suffern, and will bring together history students, their advisers, and Social Studies Department chairpeople from schools all over Rockland.
Student historians will talk about key aspects of the county’s history over the past 50 years including: the impact of the Tappan Zee Bridge, county government, recreation and sports, social changes, businesses, and jobs and occupations.
Giving the keynote speech will be former county executive and past president of the historical society, C. Scott Vanderhoef.
Also scheduled to speak are: Dr. Cliff L. Wood, president of SUNY-RCC; present County Executive Edwin J. Day; Alden Wolfe, chairman of the County Legislature; District Attorney Thomas Zugibe; Sheriff Louis Falco III; and Rockland county clerk Paul Piperato.
Planning the conference itself are: Richard Donegan, the historical society’s education coordinator, and William Sherwood and Larry Singer, co-chairs of the society’s Education Committee.
High schools participating in the conference are: Albertus Magnus, Clarkstown North, Clarkstown South, Nanuet, North Rockland, Nyack, Pearl River, Ramapo, Spring Valley, Suffern, and Tappan Zee.
Attendance at the conference is by invitation only, the society said.
