ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Customers were shocked to find the doors of the Met Fresh Supermarket in Nyack locked on Tuesday along with a sign taped to a window that said "Store Closed — Permanent."

The store, known for its fresh, organic fruits, vegetables, and meats, opened its door in mid-2016 in the Hub Complex on Route 59.

Popular with local residents, the store took the place of a former Stop & Shop grocery.

The grocery's website and its Facebook page make no mention of its closing, and a call to the store was not answered. The store was believed to employ between 40 and 50 people, but there is no word whether they were given notice.

The grocery is owned by Rudy Nunez, who also owns supermarkets in the Bronx and Queens. Attempts to reach Nunez were unsuccessful.

Other supermarkets in the Nyack area include a ShopRite in West Nyack, and a Fairway Market and Stop & Shop in Nanuet.
