Carlos Cabrera, 44, of Brentwood, was walking along Main Street near Third Avenue around 6:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, when Ricardo Siguenza, 32, of Bay Shore, allegedly smashed him in the head with a metal object before fleeing, police said.

Cabrera suffered devastating injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he fought for his life—until now. Authorities confirmed on Saturday, March 15, that he had succumbed to his wounds, escalating the case to the Homicide Squad.

Siguenza was initially charged with second-degree assault and arraigned in First District Court. With Cabrera’s death, police have not yet announced upgraded charges, but investigators are working the case as a homicide.

Detectives are urging anyone with information to contact Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
