Hudson Valley Fire Leaves 24 Homeless, Injures 2 At least two residential buildings were destroyed during a two-alarm fire in the Hudson Valley that left 24 people homeless. The incident occurred in Orange County at 11:20 p.m. on Monday, April 8, at 59 and 61 Carter St., in the city of Newburgh. According to Mike Neppl, a spokesman for the Newburgh Fire Department, arriving units found the rear of 59 and 61 Carter Street fully involved with fire, which was spreading to the interior of the buildings.  Neppl said crews stretched handlines into the interior and began bringing the fire down and searching for hidden fire. Man Dies After Jumping From Bridge In Hudson Valley A man from the region was killed after jumping from a Hudson Valley bridge. The incident took around 9 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 29, in Dutchess County where the New York State Police began investigating a report of a man jumping from the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge in Beacon. According to Trooper AJ Hicks, the Newburgh Fire Department marine unit located Orange County resident Lester R. Banta, age 55, of Maybrook.  He was pronounced dead at the scene. Newburgh Fire Department Unveils New Recruits, Announces Promotions The Newburgh Fire Department's two new recruits and a handful of promotions were announced at a special ceremony. Wytoskia T. Balty and Rigoberto Medina officially became probationary firefighters on Thursday, said Fire Chief Terry Ahlers. The men will begin training at the New York State Fire Academy this weekend and continue for the next 11 weeks. Other promotions include Michael Kiernan who was promoted to Lieutenant.
