Orange County Residents Nabbed On Gun Charges During Traffic Stop, Police Say
Five residents in the region, including three juveniles, were nabbed on alleged gun charges during a routine traffic stop.
The incident occurred in Orange County around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16, on I-84 in Deerpark.
According to New York State Police Trooper Steven Nevel, troopers initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver as Orange County resident Jaykris Vargas, age 23, of Middletown.
While interviewing Vargas, troopers developed probable cause to search the vehicle. While searching the car, they located a loaded semi-automatic handgun, Nevel said.

A pickup driver failed to yield the right of way in a crash that killed a 54-year-old man on Route 209, according to police.
The collision took place in Orange County around 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 19 in Deerpark.

Hudson Valley Fire Department Lieutenant Admits To Being Major Drug Trafficker
A former Hudson Valley fire lieutenant has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to operating as a major drug trafficker.
Orange County resident Paul Smith, age 52, of Deerpark, was sentenced to 10 to 25 years on Wednesday, Nov. 16, said Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler.
Smith, a paid lieutenant with the city of Middletown Fire Department at the time of his arrest, was also sentenced to five years post-release supervision, the DA's Office said.

Man Who Stepped Out Of Vehicle After Crash With Deer Struck, Killed By SUV In Hudson Valley
A 70-year-old man was hit and killed by an SUV when he stepped out of a vehicle to inspect the damage after hitting a deer.
The incident took place in Sullivan County around 6:40 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21 in the town of Mamakating, said Trooper Steven Nevel, of the New York State Police.

Hudson Valley Woman Hit With 31 Tickets After Fleeing Attempted Traffic Stop, Police Say
A Hudson Valley woman who allegedly refused to stop for state police was issued 31 traffic tickets including one for driving impaired.
The incident took place in Orange County in the hamlet of Deerpark, around 11:50 p.m. on Sunday, July 31.
According to state police, troopers spotted a 2020 Ford Mustang traveling on Peenpack Trail in Huguenot, in violation of several traffic laws, said Trooper Steven Nevel.
When troopers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver, later identified as Orange County resident Brittaney Brush, age 29, of Huguenot, failed to stop, Nevel said.

Man Who Shot At Troopers In Area Charged With Attempted Murder, Police Say
A Hudson Valley man who fired at New York State troopers during a domestic dispute and was in return shot by troopers has been charged with the attempted murder of a police officer.
Orange County resident Patrick Hermanowski, age 39, of Westbrookville, was charged on Tuesday, Sept. 14, and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail, said Trooper Steven Nevel.
According to Nevel, the incident took place around 2:50 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 12, when troopers and the Deerpark Police responded to a 911 call in Westbrookville.

The number of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and fatalities are all on the rise in Orange County as the Hudson Valley contends with a new wave of the virus.
The number of active cases is up to 2,427, up nearly 1,000 from one month ago, according to the county Department of Health. Newly confirmed fatalities brought the death toll up to 774 as of Tuesday, March 30.
A total of 122 COVID-19 patients are being treated in Orange County hospitals.

22-Year-Old Accused Of Damaging Vehicle, Hitting Victim With Rock In Area, Police Say
An area man was arrested in connection with a domestic incident in which he allegedly damaged a vehicle and struck the victim with a rock.
Orange County resident Colleam Small, age 22, of Middletown, was arrested around 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30, when the New York State Police responded to a home in the town of Deerpark for a domestic dispute, said Trooper Steven Nevel.
An investigation found that Small caused damage to a 1998 Mercedes Benz and struck the victim in the head with a rock, Nevel said.

Covid-19: Here's Latest Rundown Of Orange County Cases By Community
The number of active COVID-19 cases in Orange County has dropped back below 3,000 after topping 3,300 last week as the region continues combating the resurgence of the virus.
County health officials are now monitoring 2,549 active cases on Wednesday, Jan. 20, days after it was reporting 3,341 as recently as Friday, Jan. 15.
The state Health Department was reporting 274 new cases reported in the past 24 hours.
There have now been 28,848 COVID-19 confirmed positives reported in Orange County out of more than 436,000 tests administered, according to the Department of Health.
