The approval brings a 17-month review process that was fraught discontent to a close. Supporters of the $500 million project looked to the economic development and jobs that would come to the area thanks to the park. Opponents, on the other hand, cited traffic and other environmental concerns, the Record reported.

The vote was 6-0, with Dave Gawronski abstaining. Some critics of the theme park said they would aim to vote out all members of the Town Board this November, the Record said.

In the meantime, Merlin, the owners of Legoland, hope to start construction this year and have a tentative opening date of 2019.
