Citing FBI data from 2017, NewYorkUpstate.com ranked the 30 most dangerous cities and towns with populations greater than 5,000 residents by aggregating crime counts in each locale.

The report states that researchers standardized the number of crimes per location, then weighed violent crimes at 80 percent and property crimes at 20 percent, as violent crime is often of greater concern to residents.

The report only includes municipalities from upstate New York - which is considered by the website to be areas north of Westchester and Rockland counties for this study - in the rankings.
