Mail Won’t Be Delivered Thursday, Jan. 9: Here's Why The United States Postal Service will pause mail delivery and retail services on Thursday, Jan. 9, to honor the life and legacy of former President Jimmy Carter on a National Day of Mourning. All post office locations will be closed for the day, following an executive order from President Joe Biden directing federal agencies to close as a mark of respect for Carter, the nation’s 39th president. National Day Of Mourning To Close Sullivan County Government Offices Sullivan County government offices, including transfer stations and the Department of Motor Vehicles, will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 9, to observe the National Day of Mourning following the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. According to County Spokesman Dan Hurst, essential services, including the 911 center, the Care Center, and the Sheriff’s Office, will continue operating as usual.  Legislature meetings scheduled for the day have also been canceled.
