County Exec At Heart Of Measles Outbreak Hails Law Ending Religious Exemptions For Vaccines
Elected officials from across New York state, including Rockland County -- the epicenter of a measles outbreak -- hailed a new state law that bans non-medical exemptions from vaccinations. "This is a great step forward in protecting the public health here in New York," said Rockland County Executive Ed Day. Day Issues New State Of Emergency Declaration
Rockland County Executive Ed Day has issued a third state of emergency declaration in response to the ongoing measles outbreak in the county. The new declaration replaces the second declaration that expired on Saturday, May 25, said John Lyon, spokesman for Rockland County. As of Friday, May 24 there were 250 reported cases of measles since the outbreak began last October. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a public health emergency Tuesday, April 9, in select zip codes in Williamsburg, following a measles outbreak affecting the Orthodox Jewish community. For the second time in a year, Rockland County has ranked No. 1 in the state for overall health in the annual County Health Rankings Report, released Tuesday, March 19.
