Tractor-Trailer Rollover At State Line Closes Route 287 Overpass
The driver got out OK after a tractor-trailer tipped over Wednesday afternoon on the Route 287 overpass in Mahwah at the Rockland County border -- but area traffic wasn't faring as well. New Jersey Department of Transportation officials temporarily closed the overpass, as well as Exit 66 off the northbound highway, following the 2:45 p.m. crash. New Jersey State Police and Mahwah police also responded.

Port Jervis Men Caught With 450 Heroin Bags In Route 287 Stop, Police Say
Three New York State men -- two of them from Port Jervis -- were arrested just across the New Jersey state line by police who said they found the trio carrying 450 bags of heroin during a stop on northbound Route 287. Officer Christopher Fasulo stopped the car, driven by Donovan Burton, 18, of Port Jervis for several motor vehicle violations, Mahwah Police Chief James N. Batelli said. Mahwah police turned to the public Thursday for help finding two car burglars. The thefts occurred in and around the Cragmere area around 2 a.m. Wednesday, Police Chief James N. Batelli said. “The proceeds from one of the thefts included a credit card which was used to purchase a number of items at a Walmart In Kearny” a couple of hours later, the chief said. A security guard at a Route 17 truck stop was carrying a loaded handgun and wearing clothing that suggested he was a police officer, said Mahwah police who arrested him. The defendant, 58-year-old Timothy M. Prahm of Secaucus, was one of three UMDNJ paramedics fired in 2008 after photos surfaced of them dressed as members of the KKK and holding a large wooden cross. A Pennsylvania driver whose car rear-ended an SUV on northbound Route 287 late Friday afternoon, ejecting a 12-year-old boy, was intoxicated and unlicensed, New Jersey State Police said. They arrested Michael Deans at his Pine Hill Road home along with Jordan Winfree of Englewood, both 29, after a warranted search turned up marijuana package for resale, high-concentrate THC oil and a pot grow room, Police Chief James N. The latest great bear hunt left one up a Waldwick tree as police pursuers gathered below. Uniformed officers from Midland Park, Ridgewood and Waldwick chased the furry forager through area yards. The bear played in trash, sunbathed on the grass, then hustled his tuchus up a tree behind a home on Evergreen Street around lunchtime. Right behind was intrepid photographer Boyd Loving. Police Tandem Avoids Route 17 Tragedy In Low-Speed Heroin User Chase
Police from several Northwest Bergen towns thwarted a potentially dangerous incident Wednesday when they closed off a stretch of northbound Route 17 to stop a heroin-addled driver from Rockland whose car bounced off the center divider several times, authorities said. UPPER SADDLE RIVER, N.J. -- Upper Saddle River Mayor Joanne Minichetti said Wednesday that a report of a stop-work order being issued by a county or state agency against pumping muddy water into a nearby stream from a site slated for dozens of luxury homes in Upper Saddle River and Mahwah was incorrect.
