A man accused of ramming into a family of eight in front of a 7-Eleven store in Rockland County, killing the pregnant mother, stood in an orange jumpsuit, shackled at the waist as his attorney entered a not guilty plea in court on Friday.
Jason Mendez, 35, of Washingtonville in Orange County, was indicted by a grand jury on Tuesday, Feb. 26, charging him with one count of murder in the second degree and seven counts of attempted murder in the second degree, said Rockland County Acting District Attorney Kevin Gilleece.

Additional charges have been filed against the man accused of intentionally driving his car twice into a family of eight, killing the mother, who was reportedly several weeks pregnant.
The incident took place around 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, when Jason Mendez, 35, of Washingtonville in Orange County, drove his vehicle into the family standing in front of the store located on North Central Highway in Garnerville, killing 32-year-old Melissa Deloatch, said Haverstraw Police Capt. Kevin Lamastro of Poughkeepsie was arrested around 6:30 p.m. Friday after the vehicle he was riding in was pulled over on River Road in Grassy Point for a stop sign violation, said Stony Point Police Lt. Daniel Hylas.

Two men were nabbed with more than $1,000 in goods allegedly stolen from the Lord & Taylor at the Palisades Mall in West Nyack.
The men, both from Queens, were arrested after Clarkstown police responded to the mall for a report of shoplifting, said Clarkstown Police Det. Sgt. Peter Walker.
The suspects, Juan Hernandez, 30, of Elmhurst, and Jeffrey Giraldo, 32, of Jackson Heights, were reportedly observed by loss prevention employees taking merchandise valued at $1,213.70, Walker said. The merchandise consisted of clothing.

Westchester Gymnastics Coach Charged With Several Sex Offenses
A popular local gymnastics coach who owned gyms across the area has been arrested on five counts of sexual conduct against a child under 13, according to Ramapo police.
Police said Joseph Lewin, 67, of Port Chester, also known as Joseph Lewandoski in the 1990s, abused children from 2001 to 2014. They also suspect that he may have sexually abused teens 16 and up as well.
In addition to the sexual abuse charge, Lewin was charged with the sexual abuse of a child, police said.
