Fallen Detective From Northern Westchester Was About To Be A Grandfather
Richard Cunningham was a decorated police officer, but he's being remembered for his work outside of uniform following his sudden death last week. Northern Westchester resident Cunningham, age 60, of Peekskill, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Aug. 31. He had been serving as a detective with the Greenburgh Police Department. He left behind a wife and three adult children. His obituary said that at the time of his death, Cunningham was about to become a grandfather. Police have not disclosed the cause of his death. Authorities Ask For Help Identifying Man Found Dead In Wooden Chest In Westchester
Authorities in Westchester County are asking the public for help identifying a man whose body was found in a wooden chest on the side of the Saw Mill River Parkway more than four decades ago. The man's body was discovered in Hastings-on-Hudson at 10:15 a.m. on April 23, 1978, by a driver traveling north on the parkway, according to the Westchester County District Attorney's Office. The driver pulled over after seeing a cedar chest on the side of the road and found that the chest was nailed shut. He opened the chest with a tire iron and found the man's body inside. Victim ID'd In Cold-Case Westchester Homicide
A woman who was found dead and nude on a Westchester County street more than 30 years ago has been identified by the District's Attorney's Office's newly created Cold-Case Bureau. Through the use of DNA testing and investigative genealogy, the victim, formerly known as “Jane Doe Mount Vernon” has officially been identified as Veronica Wiederhold, the DA's Office said.
