Multidrug-Resistant Campylobacter Linked To Pet Store Puppies Infects 30 People
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced an outbreak of multi-drug resistant human Campylobacter jejuni infections that have been linked to pet store puppies in more than a dozen states. The strain has now been identified in 30 people in 13 states, including four hospitalizations. There have been no deaths linked to Campylobacter jejuni. According to the CDC, illnesses started on dates ranging from Jan. 6 through Nov. 10. Superbug Scare: 35K Die Annually From Drug-Resistant Infection, Number Sickened In Millions
“Superbugs” are killing thousands each year and sickening millions more, nearly twice as many as previously thought, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the report, more than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur in the U.S. each year, and more than 35,000 people die as a result. In addition, 223,900 cases of Clostridioides difficile occurred in 2017 and at least 12,800 people died. Outbreak Of Pet Store Related Infection Hits New York
A multi-state outbreak of a drug-resistant illness linked to pet store puppies is currently under investigation, according to the CDC. As of December 2017, two people in both Connecticut and New York were infected with Campylobacter bacteria -- which is resistant to commonly recommended, first-line antibiotics making it difficult to treat. Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence indicates that contact with puppies sold through Petland stores is a likely source of this outbreak.
