New York ranked 43rd overall, or ninth worst when it came to debt problems associated with post-high school education.
WalletHub ranked all 50 states and Washington, D.C. across seven metrics:
- Average student debt
- Proportion of students with debt
- Student debt as a percentage of income
- Unemployment rate for people ages 25 to 34
- Percentage of student loans in past-due or default status
- Percentage of student loan borrowers in past-due or default status

New York only finished in the top half in four categories: percentage of student loans in default or past-due status (17th), unemployment rate (22nd), average student debt (23rd) and proportion of students with debt (50th).
Only Mississippi, Connecticut, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Georgia, Maine and Rhode Island finished below New York.
