In an effort to save lives, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, the Town of Carmel Police Department, and the Kent Police Department announced their departments will participate in a special statewide enforcement effort to crack down on impaired driving.
The enforcement effort will run from Friday, Jan. 31 and ends early Monday, Feb. 3.
The Super Bowl is America’s most-watched national sporting event and Super Bowl Weekend is historically a deadly period for impaired driving, the departments said.
Research shows that high-visibility enforcement can reduce impaired driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent.
Sobriety checkpoints play a key part in raising awareness about the problem.
The New York State Police, as well as sheriffs and local law enforcement across the state will also be taking part in the effort.
Drivers can help make a difference by downing the STOP DWI effort mobile app at stopdwi.org/mobileapp.
They also suggest that those hosting a Super Bowl party, designate a responsible driver before the game begins.
