Police Charge Mahopac Man In Motorcycle Theft

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Yorktown police charged a Mahopac man with grand larceny and other offenses after a report of a stolen motorcycle on Monday.

Christopher G. Canero, 24, of Mahopac, was charged with third-degree grand larceny, third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless driving and other traffic violations. 

According to police, Officer Jason Swart went to 731 Locksley Road to investigate a report of a stolen motorcycle. The investigation revealed that while visiting a Locksley Road resident, Canero took a 2005 Suzuki GSXR-600 motorcycle from the driveway, according to the police report. 

Yorktown police notified neighboring police agencies of the incident, including a description of the motorcycle and the suspect, the report said. Yorktown police were notified that Carmel police were trying to stop of motorcycle matching that description on Route 6. 

According to the report, the motorcyclist failed to stop and evaded police on several roads throughout Yorktown and Putnam County. Police then received information about the driver's destination in Mahopac, the report said.

Canero was stopped by Carmel police at Charles Place in Mahopac. Yorktown police arrived, and Canero was arrested at 11:15 p.m. The motorcycle was recovered at the scene and transported to Yorktown police headquarters, the report said. 

Canero was arraigned in Yorktown Town Court and held on $35,000 bond or $30,000 cash, according to the report. He was being held at the Westchester County jail and is due back in court on Tuesday.
