Patterson FD Member Alleges Conflicts Of Interest On EMS Vote

PATTERSON, N.Y. -- Conflict surrounding a new town controlled emergency medical service in Patterson hasn't slowed the process from moving forward as the town board voted to move ahead with the process, according to the Examiner News.

But at least one Patterson resident, Monica DeFeo, who works as the Patterson Volunteer Fire Department’s recording secretary and as an EMT, questioned whether committee members who voted in favor of the service, could also be hired to work for the service, reported the Examiner News.

Currently, Patterson hires EMStar to cover the town during the day and volunteers work the evening shifts. Under the new service, the town would operate the entire service, said the Examiner News.

Town Attorney Donald Rossi provided DeFeo and the board with a written legal opinion saying he doesn't believe the board did anything wrong, but added that he wasn't hired to comment on conflict of interest, added the Examiner News.

Town Supervisor Rich Williams said the new EMS service has received preliminary approval from the state, although they still needed to present a roster of personnel and make sure the ambulance is inspected, reported the Examiner News.
