Charles 'Chuck' Flickinger, Longtime Lake Carmel Firefighter, 56

CARMEL, N.Y. --  Charles “Chuck” Flickinger, 56, of Lake Carmel, died Sunday following a long battle with cancer.

Flickinger, born on April 10, 1960, to Charles and Joan (Markham) Flickinger, Sr., in Middletown, Conn., served with the U.S. Marines from 1978 to 1982 and was a lifetime member of the Lake Carmel Fire Department.

Married to Charlotte Berwind since 1996, Flickinger worked as a registered nurse at St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers.

Flickinger sought to serve wherever help was needed including helping to rebuild Homestead, Fla., after Hurricane Andrew, the recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina, and volunteering after the Haitian earthquake. He was also one of the first to search for survivors of the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11 with the Lake Carmel Fire Department.

He was known for his sharp wit and intelligence and his wicked sense of humor; he also enjoyed his motorcycle, a fine cigar, a cold beer, a bonfire and time at the beach. 

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte and his dog Rex; three sisters, nieces, and nephews and his wife’s family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lake Carmel Fire Department or Regional Hospice Care CT.

A visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Cargain Funeral Homes, 10 Fowler Ave., Carmel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2103 Route Six, Brewster. Interment will be private.
