Whetsel, a Democrat, and Gouldman, a Republican, are running to represent District 2 in the Putnam County Legislator, replacing Sam Oliverio, who is running for County Executive. District 2 represents Putnam Valley. The two participated in a League of Women Voters debate at Carmel High School.

"I'm a businessman, not a politician," said Gouldman, who runs a bar in Hell's Kitchen. "I know how to create and run a business. I understand the frustrations individuals go through to make a living."

Gouldman said he would like to see Putnam County run more like a business.

"I want to improve services, lower costs and cut the waste," Gouldman said. "I want government to work for you, not against you."

Whetsel is a 30-year resident of Putnam Valley and currently sits on the Putnam Valley Town Board.

"I am familiar with government and how it works," Whetsel said. "Government is based on balance. It's important for all of us to share our views and find a balance in everything we choose."

Whetsel said Putnam must be diligent in protecting its water supply, it's environment and provide services and leep taxes low so seniors can stay in the community.

Whestel said when she first drove up the Taconic and saw Putnam, her reaction was "wow."

"It's a very special place," Whetsel said. "I feel we can move ahead in a way that protects our assets. I don't want to see our assets disappear. People live here because of the beautiful things we have. We need to protect that."

Gouldman said every day he commutes to Manhattan, he is grateful that he lives in Putnam.

"I make it a point to always look around," Gouldman said. "There's deer and rabbits. It's a great place to live. I want to keep Putnam the way it is."

Jeff Green, a Kent resident, who is running on the Democratic ticket for District 3 was also at the debate. His opponent, Republican candidate Toni Addonizio, did not attend.

"We have to make Putnam open for business," Green said. "Putnam could thrive with creative thinking. I want to bring fresh ideas to the county level, free of party politics."
