ShopRite Parent Company Among New Bidders For 12 A&P Stores

The closest stores, both carrying the flagship A&P brand, are in Danbury, Conn., and the Dutchess County community of Lagrangeville.

The other 10 stores, a mix of Pathmark and Waldbaum's locations, are in Long Island and the greater Philadelphia area.

Wakefern has been designated as a stalking-horse bidder, which means that it will be able to get court approval for acquiring the stores if no competing bids emerge. If another "qualified" bidder emerges for the stores, according to the filing, then an auction for the cluster will be held on Oct. 8.

Wakefern is one of four new stalking-horse bidders announced this week, according to court filings.

Morton Williams, a small grocery chain focused in New York City, is bidding for three Food Emporium stores in Manhattan; the bid is worth more than $22 million.

Federal Realty Investment Trust has made a bid for three stores: a Waldbaum's in Long Island, an A&P-branded location in New Jersey and an Pathmark in New Jersey. The value of the bid is more than $6 million.

Food Bazaar, a grocery chain with stores across the tri-state area - its sole Hudson Valley location is in Mount Vernon - is bidding for four stores. The stores include a Pathmark in Brooklyn, a Pathmark in New Jersey, an A&P-branded store in New Jersey and a Food Basics in New Jersey. The bid is valued at $11.75 million.

Earlier this week, A&P received approval from a bankruptcy court judge to sell 70 of its stores to Acme Markets and 24 to Stop & Shop. All remaining stores that do not have stalking-horse bidders will be included in what is called a "global" auction, according to court records, which is scheduled for Oct. 1 and Oct. 2.
