Village Clerk Pauline Minners told Daily Voice on Thursday that she checked with the New York Conference of Mayors and the state's election law pertaining to villages. Based on that, she explained that a runoff election is required unless both candidates consent in writing to waiving it.
If a waiver is agreed to by the candidates, then a drawing of lots would be held by a county court judge, she explained. The drawing would take place at the Putnam County courthouse in Carmel.
It is not clear how the drawing would be conducted, Minners explained.
The two candidates, Danielle Pack McCarthy and Thomas Robertson, each received 90 votes in connection with Wednesday's election for an open seat.
The deadline for the candidates to decide on whether to waive having a runoff is by the end of business on Friday, according to Minners.
