Shopping at the farmers markets and stands means enjoying foods at their seasonal peak. The variety of local produce and value-added farm products at a farmers market is much greater and fresher than a supermarket, therefore, they have a higher level of nutrients and taste.
“We are fortunate to live in an area that has local agriculture, and there is nothing like eating farm-fresh food,” said County Executive MaryEllen Odell. “Putnam County is where the country begins, and by shopping at the farmers markets and farm stands we are supporting our neighbors and bettering ourselves.”
“You can’t get any fresher than buying from the farmer next door,” said Lauri Taylor, district manager of the Putnam County Soil & Water Conservation District. “Markets provide the opportunity for farmers and neighbors to educate each other on nutrition, cooking, how the produce is grown, how best to store and prepare. Every dollar you spend at a local farm or farmers market supports the small business and the local economy. You can do your part to ensure that there will be farms in Putnam County for the next generation. Farmers markets provide a crucial link between the consumer and local farmers. Visit a farmers market/stand regularly and you’ll get to know the family behind the produce."
