Libious Indicted For Lying About Getting Son Job At Area Law Firm

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- New York State Senator Thomas W. Libious has been found guilty of making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). As a result of his conviction, Libous forfeits his Senate seat and faces up to five years in prison, according to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Libous, 62, of Binghamton is scheduled to be sentenced on October 30 for a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

“Public corruption is a scourge. Every New Yorker wants us to work as hard as possible to end it. But lies to law enforcement make the job of fighting corruption doubly difficult," Preet Bahara, the U.S. Attorney said. "Today, a jury unanimously found that Tom Libous, the second highest ranking New York Senator, told lie after lie to hide the truth from federal agents investigating corruption in Albany. Libous’s lies have been exposed, his crime has been proven, and Albany will be the better for it.”

According to the U.S. attorney, the charges against Libous stemmed from allegation that he arranged for a family member to get a job at a Westchester Law firm in exchange for several favors most prominently including secret payments totaling $50,000 per year.
