District Attorney Adam Levy and Sheriff Donald B. Smith are now battling each other in defamation lawsuits that arose from the rape case, according to the story. There are also allegations of political retribution and conflicts of interest.
The feud stems from a rape case that unfolded in 2013. Smith arrested a friend of Levy’s on charges of raping a 13-year-old girl. Levy said the arrest was in retaliation for his efforts to clean up corruption.
Levy’s friend, Alexandru Hossu, was found not guilty in April by a Westchester jury, which found the girl had not been credible, the Times story said. Levy was not involved in defending his friend.
