The FBI has learned that escapees David Sweat and Richard Matt may have enjoyed greater freedoms than other prisoners in the so-called honor block, CNN reported, citing law enforcement officials.
Possible corruption at the prison is also being investigated, according to multiple reports.
The 23-day manhunt that cost approximately $1 million per day ended Sunday when Sweat, the remaining at-large escapee, was shot and captured about two miles south of the Canadian border in Constable, N.Y.
Sweat is in stable condition at Albany Medical Center.
Sweat's capture came two days after Matt was shot and killed when he refused to surrender about 14 miles south of Constable, near Malone, N.Y.
