CDC Warns Respiratory Virus May Be Linked To Mysterious Paralysis

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is looking into nine cases of children who have experienced limb weakness or paralysis after contracting a respiratory virus.

According to the report, the cases were identified among children between one and 18 years old, mostly around the Denver area, who had all reported having some sort of respiratory virus before showing limb weakness. Six of the eight children tested were positive for a rhinovirus or enterovirus, and four of those cases were found to be the Enterovirus 68 (EV-D68). Two cases are still pending.

The CDC has not yet determined if EV-D68 is the direct cause of limb weakness or paralysis, but are asking medical workers to report similar cases, according to the report.

The New York State Department of Health has confirmed the spread of enterovirus-D68 (EV-D68) throughout New York State and is again reminding New Yorkers to take precautions to stop new infections.
