Teams from each of the schools were there to battle it out in Chung Ma's Taekwondo of Mahopac's sixth annual 'Board Break-A-Thon.'
Participants pay to enter the competition, the four teams representing the schools then take turns breaking as many boards as they can, with 100% of funds going to the schools represented.
Teams from each school marched into the packed gymnasium in an Olympic style procession Friday night, waving to excited friends and relatives in the crowd.
"We do a martial arts program at all the elementary schools in Mahopac and Putnam Valley," Wayne DeRosa of Chung Ma's told Daily Voice. "And as a way to give back to the schools, we run this board breaking event that all the kids can participate in.
"In the last six years we've raised close to $18,000 dollars for the local PTOs and PTAs," DeRosa added. "The kids love it, the excitement, the adrenalin through this whole place is going to rock the roof. Everyone gets involved, everyone is excited for the kids, it's great team sportsmanship, and everyone is proud of each one of them."
