An estimated 700,000 Americans are living with a primary brain tumor. And an estimated 84,000 will receive a primary brain tumor diagnosis in 2021. Those are some big numbers! That’s why the board-certified team of surgeons at BSSNY provide a Cranial Base and Tumor Program that is catered to each individuals needs.

Brain tumors come in all shapes, sizes, and are located in different areas of the brain. They are divided into many classifications:

1. Primary brain tumors refer to tumors that originate in the brain. They may be either benign or malignant.

2. Metastatic tumors originate elsewhere in the body and travel through the bloodstream to the brain. These types of tumors are always malignant.

Most tumors are biopsied prior to treatment. In cases where the tumor is adjacent to vital structures, a decision may be made prior to surgery to perform only a biopsy rather than attempting to remove the entire tumor.

Some brain tumors do not produce symptoms. Other times, symptoms may include headaches (especially at night), seizures or neurological difficulties related to speech, vision, numbness, weakness, balance or walking.

Finding out you or a loved one has a brain tumor can be very scary.
