Local farms go above and beyond for the fall season offering a beautiful variety of pumpkins and favorite autumn attractions, like hayrides and corn mazes. What follows is a sampling.
Kessman Farms Pumpkin Patch - 313 Cornwall Hill Rd., Patterson (845) 878-7492
This is THE place for pumpkin picking. The farm is filled with pumpkins of all sizes: giant, tiny, tall and round. Their patch is open on Saturdays, Sundays and on Columbus Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Oct. 26. Kessman Farms Pumpkin Patch also offers long hayrides, a picnic area, refreshments, cornstalks, Indian corn, gourds, a haymaze for kids and petting zoo.
Outhouse Orchards - 139 Hardscrabble Rd. Croton Falls (914) 277-3188
While Outhouse Orchards, “Home of the Happy Apple,” is fresh out of the joyous fruit, they still have plenty to pick in their picturesque pumpkin patches.
At this farm, which lies near the Putnam border, you can also enjoy cider, purchase gourds and Halloween decorations or check out the corn maze.
Outhouse Orchards also has 15 minute hayride tours of the Hudson Valley farm.
Dykeman Farm - 823 West Dover Rd., Pawling (845) 832-6068
Dykeman Farm has been inviting families to pick their own pumpkins since 1974. They are open every weekend in October and on Columbus Day and also have gourds, Indian corn, corn stalks and more. Take a hayride directly into the patch and enjoy refreshments while your kids get their faces painted.
Danbury Railway Museum’s Pumpkin Patch Train - 120 White St., Danbury, CT (203) 778-8337
Enter a pumpkin patch via vintage train every Saturday and Sunday until Oct. 26. The trains run hourly from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Tickets are $10 for those aged 2 or older. Admission includes a free pumpkin for every child, free cider and cookies, a coloring station, temporary tattoos and more.
It's the restored 1903 station and railyard, however, that grabs your attention just as much as the pumpkins so make sure your phone is charged for those all important selfies and family photos.
