Americorps, Putnam County Coalition and the Putnam County Veterans Service Agency hosted a thank you letter writing campaign at the Cornerstone Park Building in Carmel.
The event allowed people to write letters thanking people for their service.
"We want to thank those who risked their lives," Chauntel Wright of Americorps said. "It's a day to give thanks and remember."
Wright, whose father served in the army, said service members really appreciate getting letters of gratitude.
"It means a lot to them when people say thank you," Wright said.
Elaine Santos said they wanted to do something to give back and say thank you.
"This is a day of service," Santos said. "Sept. 11 means a great deal to me. I don't think anyone who lived it will forget where they were."
Santos said days like these keep the memory alive, especially for those too young to remember. Many of the cards were from elementary school students, who were not yet born on Sept. 11, 2001
"It's very important that we never forget," Santos said.
Kristen McConnell said in a small community like Putnam, people enjoy recognizing servicemen and first responders.
"This is a sad day," McConnell said. "But it's important we show gratitude."
McConnell said if she saw a servicemen or first responder, she would thank them for their courage and strength.
Adam Stiebeling, commissioner of emergency services for Putnam County, was one of the many writing thank you letters.
"I wanted to come out and say thank you for your service," Stiebeling said. "There are many of us that care and appreciate what you do for us."
Stiebeling said Sept. 11 was a day where the country changed forever.
"Those events affected our daily lives," Stiebeling said. "I want to thank the military for their protection and thank law enforcement for all they do to protect us."
