The show will open Sunday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Front Street Gallery, 21 Front St. in Patterson. The reception is open to the public.
“We are enthusiastic about the artistry here,” says Jeremy Wolff, owner of Front Street Gallery. “A painter and a photographer, these two artists represent a variety of work that resonates with depth and texture, with a choice of media that is radically different.” The hands-on layering in Lenz's oil paintings contrasts with the digital techniques in the photographs by Glass, whose weapon of choice is the iPhone. "Conceptually, I'm obsessed with how the whole consists of many layers," said Lenz, who is based in central Massachusetts.
"I was trained as an abstract painter and use the paint itself as a starting point. I build in layers, or veils. The veils are permeable membranes that obscure and add to the layers beneath. Together, superimposed upon each other, they create an ambiguous whole where many things are true at the same time. To me, this represents the world as it really is."
Among the works Glass will be showing at Front Street is a Roman Wall series.
"Walking aimlessly through the streets of Rome, I was drawn to the walls, with their layers of practical use and ancient history," said Glass. "Taking these photographs was sheer joy. The finished works are mounted on board and then coated with encaustic, which is beeswax and resin, used is Egyptian tomb paintings. The marriage of encaustic and the iPhone connects something of great age with how we live today, much like the markings on these walls."
