Firefighters in Bay Shore responded to a residence on North 1st Avenue near Brook Street after someone called 911 reporting a fire just after 12:30 p.m.

Inside, members of the Bay Shore Fire Department located a 65-year-old woman, according to Suffolk County Police. She was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.

It was not immediately clear how many people were in the home when flames broke out, but no other injuries were reported.

Firefighters were slowed by “Collyer’s Mansion Conditions”–or hoarding conditions–throughout the home, according to preliminary radio traffic.

The cause of the fire was under investigation Monday evening. Anyone with information was asked to contact the Suffolk County Police Arson Section at 631-852-6024.
