Gunshots, Then Crash: Car Slams Into Capital Region Home After Shooting
Police are asking for tips after two people opened fire on a car in the region, causing the vehicle to crash into a house. The incident happened at around 9:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, in Schenectady, near Eastern and Elmer avenues. Schenectady Police said the vehicle was driving near the former Elmer Avenue Elementary School campus when two suspects walking nearby shot at the car. A teenager is facing charges after allegedly bringing a loaded gun to a school in the region. Employees at Schenectady’s Oneida Middle School contacted police at around 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, after reportedly finding a 9mm semi-automatic handgun in a 13-year-old student’s locker. Drones Will Soon Respond To Police Calls In This NY Locale
Instead of a live officer, some police calls in New York will soon be answered by a drone. On Tuesday, Dec. 26 the Schenectady City Council authorized the city’s police department to enter a six-year contract with Seattle-based BRINC Drones for its “First Responder” drone program. As part of the nearly $700,000 contract, the agency will receive a fleet of BRINC’s LEMUR 2 drones, which allow for live-streaming and two-way communications. A man is fighting for his life after being struck by a car near a college campus in the region. The incident happened at around 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26 in Schenectady near Union College. Police have arrested two suspects accused of gunning down a young college student in New York who was an aspiring pilot. Usman Pirzada, age 21, was shot to death Tuesday, Dec. 19, in Schenectady’s Hamilton Hill neighborhood, according to police. Pirzada was found shortly before 9 p.m. near Lincoln Avenue and Steuben Street suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead hours later, Schenectady Police said. A potent, late autumn storm is bringing flooding and road closures to parts of the region. Flood watches or warnings are up for the entire Capital Region with rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches expected through Monday night, Dec. 18, according to the National Weather Service in Albany.
