On Long Island, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman signed the “Mask Transparency Act” into law during a ceremony held Wednesday morning, Aug. 14. Yale University Names Maurie McInnis As New President
The president of Long Island’s Stony Brook University has been selected to first permanent female president of Yale University. Maurie McInnis was named Yale’s 24th president in an announcement by the school. The 58-year-old cultural historian, currently serving as the president of Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, graduated from Yale with a Ph.D in art history in 1996. In the years since her graduation, McInnis has served in senior positions at the University of Virginia and the University of Texas at Austin before moving to Stony Brook University in 2020. Man From Region Charged By US Capitol Police For Assaulting Officers In Washington, DC
A man from the region was charged with assault on a police officer during an event in Washington, DC, to protest the conflict in the Middle East. Sullivan County resident Ruben Arthur Camacho, age 24, of the Village of Woodridge located in the town of Fallsburg, was arrested after a US Capitol Police officer witnessed him slam another officer into a garage door and then punch the female officer in the face, according to the department. Republican presidential candidate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, canceled a planned upscale fundraiser in the Hudson Valley after failing to notify the local party leader, according to Politico. The $6,600-a-person event was slated to be held in Rockland County at the Crowne Plaza in Suffern on Thursday, June 29. LBGTQ groups and local Democrats were planning protests during the event.
