750-Plus Acres Added To State Park In Hudson Valley: Provides Access To Appalachian Trail
Two several-hundred-acre land parcels have been added to a popular state park spanning two counties in the Hudson Valley, officials announced. In an announcement on Thursday, Oct. 3, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul revealed the addition of 763 acres to Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park in Putnam and Dutchess counties. The added acres will go towards meeting the state's goal of conserving 30 percent of its land and waters by 2030, Hochul said. A Hudson Valley resident who owned a business in Westchester is being remembered for his sense of adventure and his countless escapades into the great outdoors. Putnam County resident Steven Dorazio of Mahopac died on Saturday, Oct. 21 at the age of 62, according to his obituary. Born in Port Chester in 1960, Dorazio was raised in the village and eventually graduated from Port Chester High School in 1978. Man Accused Of Illegally Killing Deer Near Home In Hudson Valley
A Hudson Valley man has been issued multiple tickets by state conservation officials for allegedly killing a deer out of season. The incident took place in Ulster County on Friday, Oct. 28 at a home in the town of Rochester. The state Department of Environmental Conservation officials responded to a home in Rochester after receiving reports of multiple deer being killed with the aid of bait, according to the DEC. A beloved husband and father from the Hudson Valley who was both a US Army veteran and a former police officer in Westchester County has died. Putnam County resident Richard Kennedy of Carmel died on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the age of 72, according to his obituary. Born in 1949 in New York City, Kennedy served in the US Army from 1968 to 1970 and then served as a police officer in Port Chester until he retired in 1977, his obituary said. A former high school and collegiate sports standout in the area has died. Longtime Putnam County resident Dennis Leonard, a 1992 graduate of Lakeland High School in Shrub Oak, was 47 years old. He excelled on both the varsity football and lacrosse teams before attending Salisbury University in Maryland, where he was a member of back-to-back undefeated NCAA champion lacrosse teams. A new study has found widespread COVID-19 infections among deer populations in Iowa. Researchers from the Penn State University found that more than 80 percent of white-tailed deer sampled in parts of Iowa between December of 2020 and January of 2021 tested positive for COVID-19, according to an announcement from the university on Wednesday, Nov. 3. “We found that 80 percent of the sampled deer in December were positive for SARS-CoV-2, which proportionally represents about a 50-fold greater burden of positivity than what was reported at the peak of infection in humans at the time,” said Sur…

George Taranto, a Connecticut resident and former high school sports standout in Westchester County, has died at the age of 77. According to his obituary, Taranto, of Danbury, was a graduate of Ardsley High School and was all-county in football and basketball. He served in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1965. Investigation Underway After Hunter Finds Human Skeletal Remains In Area
Police are investigating after a hunter allegedly located human skeletal remains in the area. New York State Police in Sullivan County responded to Brisco Road in the town of Liberty after a hunter reportedly discovered human skeletal remains inside the wood line on Wednesday, Nov. 27.
