An iconic radio station that has served the New York metropolitan area for 57 years will be permanently signing off within weeks. Audacy, the parent company of WCBS NewsRadio 880, just announced that the station will end its run as an all-news station later this month. Audacy also operates another New York City-based all-news station, 1010 WINS. Audacy will keep 880 in its stable of stations, and it will become ESPN New York beginning Monday, Aug. 26. Nationwide Emergency Alert System Test Scheduled
Fret not, it will only be a test. A nationwide Emergency Alert System (EAS) test is scheduled to be conducted on Wednesday, Aug. 11 on radios, televisions, and cellphones where users have opted in to receive alerts. The test is being conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and is expected to begin at approximately 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. Officials are warning of new “smishing” scams that have been making the rounds. The Federal Trade Commission issued an alert cautioning consumers of new scams that have been using text messages, not the traditional emails. One such scam involves the fraudster offering to provide major savings on television services. The scams involve the victims sending back personal information, or infecting devices with malware.
