Chain-Reaction Crash Injures 2 Cops During Traffic Stop On Sunrise Highway
Two Nassau County Police officers were struck and injured during a traffic stop on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. Community Oriented Police Enforcement (COPE) officers stopped an Audi on the eastbound side near East Chestnut Street and were walking toward the car when a Honda struck the back of the patrol car at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 16, police said. The collision caused the police vehicle to strike both officers before hitting the parked Audi. Both officers suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital, police said. Southern State Parkway Rollover: Multiple Lanes Blocked By Reported East Islip Crash
A serious crash briefly blocked multiple lanes on a major Long Island highway on Christmas Eve. The incident happened on the eastbound Southern State Parkway near Sunrise Highway in East Islip, shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24. Multiple emergency vehicles responded to a reported rollover crash, according to preliminary radio traffic. It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured or how many vehicles were involved. Department of Transportation cameras showed at least two lanes blocked with a brief backup behind the crash site. The roadway was fully reopened by 3:45 p.m.

The incident happened on the westbound Sunrise Highway near William Floyd Parkway in Shirley on Friday afternoon, Dec. 13. This story has been updated. A mother is accused of causing a drunken, wrong-way crash on a Long Island highway that killed her 9-year-old son. The early-morning wreck happened on the Southern State Parkway, near exit 42 in Islip, at around 2:20 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22.
